Dancing in the rain!

Rain can't stop holiday tradition.
Monsoon holidaying is here to stay.

After all, you can't let a little rain spoil the fun, can you? When the heavens open up and the rain starts to come down in buckets, just go and soak in it. It can be a truly exhilarating experience. Put your tongue out and taste the delicious water. Inhale deeply of the sweet aroma of rain-drenched earth. There are few things to beat that smell. And remember if the constant drizzle makes the outlook dreary, the sun is sure to come smiling through eventually! And rain is good for the crops!

It has been well said that every cloud has a silver lining. As far as rain holidays go, there is lots to choose from. There are hill stations and beaches.

Hit Goa in the monsoon

To see Nature at its best in the rainy season, you want to be in Goa. Blessed with a beautiful coastline on its west and the Western Ghats on its east, it presents a great mixture of coastal beauty and rugged terrain. More than half of Goa is wooded and this is seen in sharp relief at the time of the Southwest monsoon.

True, the Arabian Sea at the height of its ferocity coupled with the torrential rain can all but disconcert a traveller, but you can't get away from the fact that the thick evergreen forests on the mountains with dark clouds overhanging them present a breathtaking view.

Backwater cruises down the Mandovi and Zuari rivers, dolphin cruises on the high seas, adventure sports and water sports are other ways of amusing oneself here.

The beaches are packed even in the rainy season. Walkers prefer the firm wet beach sand when they take a stroll on the beach. And the cool breezes brought on by the rain inspire many a languid beach goer to even break into a jog-trot!

There is much to be said for rain holidays. You get special monsoon rates! And you get to see incomparable natural sights. After all, but for the rain how does one see the rainbow?

A Rain Holiday In The Hills

If you are a hill station buff looking for a monsoon break, Coorg is a good bet. At Coorg, the rain adds to the inherent natural beauty of this picturesque hill station making it even prettier!

The hills and valleys wear dark green robes and the River Cauvery gushes forth in all its fury. Small seasonal waterfalls form everywhere. You see verdant tea gardens here and rolling hills with cardamom plantations there, and the sights are good enough for the Gods!

Besides drinking in all the awesome sights, there is lots more that you can do.
Ever swing a bat in the rain? No? Then it's about time you did. At the Kodagu resort of Club Mahindra you can play Rain Cricket! And as for the ones who would rather be moving to rhythm, you can do a bit of rain dancing. There is something unbelievably thrilling about dancing in the rain. Let the rain soak you and if you have a loved one to get drenched with, then joy is sure to be unconfined. There are other ways of amusing yourself. Get in touch with your inner self. Do some yoga and meditation. Play anthakshri. Or cards. Watch a movie or listen to music with your family and make sure you have hot vadais, popcorn and great-tasting Coorg coffee for company.

Other popular diversion include plantation walks, trips to the elephant sanctuary at Dubare, splashing in the swimming pool and treasure hunting.

Munnar in the western ghats, is also a great hill station getaway. Besides being a visual feast full of verdant tea plantations, it is an ideal spot for trekking, rock climbing and rappelling.

Useful Tips While Rain Holidaying

Extra shoes and sandals are a must. Leather footwear is a no-no. So take your galoshes and rubber shoes!

Light synthetic clothes can keep you warm. They also dry quickly. Say goodbye to soggy clothes hanging on the clothesline waiting for the sun.

Mosquitoes can be a nuisance in the rains, so you would do well to keep them at bay. Use a mosquito net or secure yourself with an organic insect repellent.

Colds, clogged noses and bronchial problems are common. Make sure you have the necessary medicine to discourage colds and chills. Always protect your hair, feet and ears in this weather.

Make sure you eat well-cooked food or you could come down with a stomach ailment.
Watch out for landslides during torrential rainfall. Always check the weather report to know which places to avoid.

Electric shocks are frequent hazards during the rains. Say it with rubber shoes.
